Transcultural Compositions is an artistic research project that takes place across Austria and Ukraine. It is centered around the ornamental and musical compositions of Ukrainian architect Vasyl Krychevskyi and Austrian composer Arnold Schönberg. Using an experimental approach, the artists explore visual and spatial patterns in music and rhythmic structures in ornaments. These elements are then translated into various artistic mediums, such as movement, imagery, and sound.
The project is developed in several stages:
- Virtual Residency with Ukrainian Gallery of Scenography
- Field Trip to the Creative Residence MC6 (Transcarpathia)
- Creation of an interdisciplinary performance in collaboration with the Ukrainian Partners.
The project centers on the pan-European essence of Ukrainian cultural identity, challenging the entrenched post-Soviet narrative shaped by years of imperialist colonization. We tackle this complex issue through specific examples familiar to our audiences in both countries.
Virtual Residency
In the initial phase of the project, the artist conducted an in-depth study of works by Schönberg and Krychevskyi, focusing on specific rhythmic patterns and ornamental compositions from each. These elements were then reinterpreted and transformed into a unique movement language. The creative process unfolded through virtual collaboration with the artists from the Gallery of Scenography, whose input enriched the development. The outcomes of this exchange were subsequently woven into the final performance, seamlessly integrating the material into a cohesive artistic expression.

The virtual residency was kindly supported by the Culture Moves Europe Program and realized in partnership with Beat1060.
